The City University of New York's graduate center, the CUNY Graduate Center, is dedicated to doctoral and master's education for the public good and is a pioneer in public graduate education.


Over 3,500 master's and doctorate students are enrolled at the Graduate Center. Ninety percent of incoming doctoral students receive five-year fellowship packages, and 24% of those are international students.


Over 1,800 more faculty members are added to a core faculty of about 140, who are selected from CUNY's eleven senior colleges and the cultural and academic institutions of New York City.


The graduate school includes 30 research centers and institutes, 14 master's degrees, and 31 doctoral programs.

Cuny graduate center acceptance rate is 43%. It also has a graduation rate of 34%, according to the US Department of Education.

How to apply to CUNY Graduate Center Admission, Rankings, and Courses 2022

  1. Review program information, requirements, and application deadlines.
  2. Connect with the program and sign up for more information.
  3. Gather your application materials. These include transcripts to CUNY, letter of recommendation, Graduate Record Examination (GRE) Score, and English as a Foreign Language. You must submit scores from either the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) or the International English Language Testing System (IELTS) unless you have a post-secondary degree from an institution in which the language of instruction is English-only and located in a country that recognizes English as an Official Language.
  4. Submit your application, supplemental material, and application fee. To officially apply, you must click “Submit” on your online application, pay the application fee, and then electronically sign the application. The Graduate Center has a nonrefundable $75 application fee. Credit card payments are accepted online.
  5. Track your application and review Financial Aid information. Once you submit your application, you will be able to track your application materials within five business days. You will need to log back into the online application and view your Next Step Checklist to review what documents may be considered outstanding.
  6. Further steps (if accepted). If your application is accepted, you’ll need to review your acceptance letter and financial assistance information. Contact Admissions, Financial Aid, or your program if you have any further questions about your acceptance.
Before registering, the Office of Admissions must have official admissions documentation.


Three to four weeks prior to the start of new student registration, admitted students will receive their registration packets.



You will be required to submit the online application form after finishing it. You will then be prompted to choose a payment option on a subsequent payment page. You have the option of paying with a credit card online or by mailing a check.


How to check your application status

For information on updates to the progress of your application, go to your CUNYfirst Student Center. If you already have a CUNYfirst account, use the steps below to see how your application is progressing:

  1. Navigate to GC portal via gc.cuny.edu/GC-Portal.
  2. Click on the CUNY First link.
  3. Enter your username and password.
  4. Once you are logged in, on the left-hand side under “CUNYfirst Menu” click ‘Student Center’
  5. Scroll down to the ‘Admissions’ section and click ‘View Details’

Students at the CUNY Graduate Center can log in via the GC portal or Cunyfirst.


All CUNY schools use the online tool CUNYfirst to oversee administrative procedures related to student affairs.



For students, instructors, and staff, this common system streamlines a variety of functions, from registering for classes to paying bills to managing grades and class rosters.


The GC Portal or this direct connection, cunyfirst.cuny.edu, can be used to access CUNYfirst. To log in, you must have a valid CUNYfirst account.


Zoom, Qualtrics online surveys, CUNY Blackboard, GC email, collaboration tools, and other CUNY technology services are also available to you.
